Too many times when a business owner gets involved in marketing their home business they lose sight of the target. Most often, they approach in one of two ways. One, they know so much about the business that they forget that not everyone is familiar with how a widget works and leaves out important information. The second mistake they make is in presuming that everyone who visits their home business website is a moron and explains everything to death.

Objectivity is the key to marketing your home business and being able to look at the information on your website and ask who you ignored or who did you talk down to may help you see some of the mistakes. Even websites designed only to sell a product or services has to include some pertinent information on their site and how that information is presented can make or break a site's allure with potential customers.

When explaining a product or service, you have to think like a customer. Consider a business selling digital cameras and the type of information a majority of the customers will be looking to find out about the cameras. Which would more people understand? It takes pictures for enhanced resolution at 10Mp per frame, or pictures so clear they can be enlarged to 11 by 14-inch without losing detail.

The majority of information presented on a website is geared towards visitors at a ninth grade reading level. While there will be those with more and less ability, the accepted average is the ninth grade. It is not so much the education or intelligence level they are trying to appeal to as it is the attention people pay to the written word. If you can't grab someone's attention in the first two or three minutes, you never will. Studies have shown the ninth grade reading level grabs visitors' interest long enough to entice them to read more.

If the writing is too intellectual, readers who do not understand will quickly lose interest. Another thing to think about, those that can understand what you are writing, probably already know what you are trying to say and they too, will lose interest and leave. Your visitors do not have to understand what 128-byte encryption means on a secure page, that has been used so often that most people understand that to mean it is safe from hackers getting in and stealing personal information during a transaction. All the customers want to know is that their information is safe from theft.

However, it isn't enough to tell people that your widget is the best on the market. They want to know what makes your widget better than anyone else's widget. If you explain how your widget works better and produces better results, you will not have to say it's the best on the market. Most visitors can figure that out for themselves.

Regardless of the approach or the media you choose to market your home business, keep your message aimed at the customers you hope to attract. By supplying them with the information they want and can use, they will be more likely to appreciate what you have to say.
