Making the Most of Your Skills and Talents in a Time of Need
With outsourcing, off shoring, and the globalization of the marketplace threatening job security for hundreds of thousands of employees, it is not surprising that many who are facing layoffs or potential buy outs with subsequent downsizing will be searching the online marketplace to see if there might be a way to either supplement or completely replace a jeopardized income. Initially you may be heartened that making the most of your skills and talents in a time of need appears to be easy since so many work from home opportunities seem to exist, but after a bit of initial checking and digging deeper, the odds are good that you will realize that many of the advertised opportunities are not what you had in mind or simply did not live up to their advertised perks.
This is the time to check on the marketability of years of on the job training you have received as well as the countless times that you stepped in and helped out a fellow coworker, a supervisor, or simply came up with an innovative way of saving time, money, or resources. Loftily referred to as a consultant, you need to find a way to contact companies that are in your field and explain that you can make their processes work faster or better, increase productivity, or do whatever you have honed your skills to accomplish over the years. This will require you to learn how to not only market your skills but also yourself as the person delivering the goods. The goal is to build up a reputation in the industry as a bona fide consultant which will have other companies come flocking to you rather than you having to search them out yourself.
Even if initially you are not able to break into the market as a consultant, making the most of your skills and talents in a time of need may require you to work as an assistant to the assistant until you can prove your worth. While initially you may serve as the person to take care of the work overflow, eventually you may become the person who will create a new system of dealing with overflow and channeling it to such an extent that no backlog will be created.
Keep in mind that no matter which industry you used to be in, the odds are good that you have gained many marketable skills in the process. Security knowledge, management experience, triage skills, and data entry capabilities also lend themselves to being springboards from which to launch your consultation career. The trick is simply in the packaging of these skills and in the presentation to potential business clients. At the heart of this line of business is network marketing which requires you to be always on the lookout for new contacts, even if at face value they do not look like business contact. Consider the fact that the lady with whom you chat in the frozen food section of the supermarket could be married to the most powerful CEO in your neck of the woods and such an unlikely contact could set you on course for a profitable career!
