Hiring Help Is Not For the Faint of Heart

Hiring Help Is Not For the Faint of Heart

There comes the day in the life of every work from home small business entrepreneur when she or he comes face to face with the reality that another pair of hands is required to keep the business growing and expanding at the rate it is currently going. At the same time, the visionary entrepreneur will already plan for the personnel needs that may actually enable the company to benefit from the current popularity it is enjoying and thus may take it a step higher! Yet hiring help is not for the faint of heart and those who think that hiring employees is a simple process will have to think twice more!

For example, one commonly made mistake is the hiring of family members. Remember that there is a difference between a family business and an entrepreneur who has done business alone and is after the fact involving family members! In the former case, the family members are each entrusted with a vital aspect of making the business grow and it is the collective effort of the family unit that makes the business work and thus keeps food on the family table. In the latter case, however, it is the entrepreneur who made the business successful and caused it to grow and the family as a whole had little or no time and energy invested in the business. It is this dynamic that causes friction when the family members begin to squabble during business hours. Without the joint investment of blood, sweat and tears, the temptation for someone to take more liberties than they would ever consider taking at a regular corporate job is ever present. For the employing entrepreneur, suddenly a conflict of interest hinders the application of the kind of work discipline other employers would engage in. Thus, unless you want to chance awkward moments around the Thanksgiving table, the employment of family members after the fact should be very carefully considered on a case by case basis.

Another situation that showcases the fact that hiring help is not for the faint of heart is the interview process. Depending on your personality, you may feel uncomfortable in the chair of the boss and thus are willing to do just about anything to get this situation over with. This may lead you to hire the first person who appears to look like she or he can do the job and then hope for the best, but this approach will lead to heartache and problems down the road! Many a prospective employee actually ferrets out small business owners in the hopes of setting up a cushy job that will permit the kind of behaviors which would not be acceptable at a large corporation. As a matter of fact, as an entrepreneur you will need to be even more vigilant about those whom you hire to ensure that you are not raising up for yourself future competition! Check references meticulously, ask the prospective employee to submit to a drug test, and also require a pre-employment personality or skills test to ascertain whether or not your future salesman really has the right stuff to sell your widgets to the public.
