Good Equipment Keeps Home-Based Business Up And Running
You have made the decision to start your home-based business. You have done all the research about your market and you have a viable product. You then went and built a great website and have all the needed software to operate an online business. You will need to evaluate your home office equipment to make sure it can what you need it to do, without sucking all the money out of your budget.
Obviously, you will need a good computer system, capable of running all the software you have acquired. This was probably done in the beginning and you have mastered all the software and have it set up for your specific needs. A printer, fax machine and scanner will also be needed in your office and if you plan to accept online credit cards you will need a card processing system to make your collections.
However, when considering all of the equipment available for a new home office, you need to ask if it is nice or is it necessary. Many of the nice pieces of equipment can wait until your business begins to show a good profit. The necessary equipment, on the other hand, will be needed to make that happen. By spending more money on quality necessary equipment, it can be longer before replacement costs become a concern.
Regardless of the type of business you are in, a good phone system will be necessary. It does not necessarily have to be anything fancy, but plan for a second line dedicated to the business as well as a dedicated fax line. This is essential, especially if you have a family. You do not want to miss any important business calls due to another family member being on the phone. Nor do you want to have to train the kids on the right way to say hello. An answering machine is also critical for those calls that come in during the night or while you are out spending some of the money you are making.
Cell phones are nice and cordless phones offer some freedom, but in the event of a power outage, a landline typically continues to work. Just because the power is out in your neighborhood does not mean your customers on the other side of the country know about it.
Laser printers and nice, quickly and usually reliable. However, a decent ink jet printer can perform many of the same functions at a fraction of the cost. Replacement cartridges are also more expensive for laser printers and color cartridges for most of them triple the cost of replacing them. Unless you are offering instant color copies, think twice about spending money on a laser printer.
A file cabinet and a storage unit that will into your home office will be a necessity to store additional office supplies as well as to file all of your business records. Yes, many store all of their records on their computer, but if the hard drive crashes, you are out of luck. A file cabinet can store digital back up disks for all of your programs, business records and hard copies of important files.
